Charges
Corrective Evaluation, Trim and Treatment Plan
$60 per typical horse (if work is completed in 1 hour)
Initial trims often exceed 1 hour due to the amount of corrective work necessary.
A Typical Horse is defined as being between 11hh - 16hh, well-behaved, stands to be trimmed.
If your horse can't stand for the trim, due to tenderness, fear or dominant temperament, the trim will take longer and cost you more.
If we have to TAP a horse, or train it to stand so we can safely attend to its hooves, it will be more expensive.
$60 - TAP.
Travelling
Flat rate is 70c / km.
Casting
$15 per cast
Our imported fibreglass casts are applied to freshly trimmed hooves in cases where the hoof wall is weak with white line separation or laminar wedge high up in the hoof wall. When the hoof has been previously damaged by being 'trimmed from the top' and/or where there is extensive white line separation and a laminar wedge in the hoof and/or extensive flaring, the internal hoof requires external support until the new hoof grows a tight laminae connection. Casting provides extra support and can make a horse whose hooves are in transition from shod to barefoot or those with laminitic hooves, more comfortable. We also recommend packing the , commissures (collateral grooves) to which anti-bacterial/anti-fungal granules have been added, and then applying Epona shoes (with mesh inserts) by gluing or nailing, depending on the hoof's condition. Packing is recommended with application of all Epona shoes as it provides support for the frog and enhances distribution of the horse's weight onto the weight-bearing structures of the sole and walls, particularly in the rear of the hoof.
Anti-Thrush Pads and Frog Supports
$15 per pad/support (per hoof)
When the hoof is distorted and the sole is thin or the heels so high that the frog is unable to contact the ground, the shock absorbing structures of the hoof and circulation system cannot function correctly. Such hooves also are much more prone to develop thrush - a fungal infection which is capable of causing extreme pain and destroying internal structures. In order to treat both the thrush and the non-functioning frog, we supply anti-bacterial/anti-fungal granules and recommend applying Epona shoes with packing and mesh.
The Tap
$60 per hour (15 minute blocks after the first hour).
The Tap is usually completed in 1 hour and can be applied for trimming and behavioural training purposes. Dangerous horses (kick, bite, rear) will not be accepted for training or trimming although at our discretion, we might offer to perform the Tap on such horses in order for them to be trimmed whilst laying down. The Tap can only be performed where facilities exist to ensure the horse's safety and our safety i.e. a secure round yard or large pen with deep sand base.
We do not have a transportable crush - yet!
Draft/Heavy Horses
$60 per hour (15 minute blocks after the first hour).
Horses with very large hooves require extra effort, equipment and time to trim. The hoofs or draft/heavy horses are not often completed in 1 hour.
Power Tool Trimming
We are now using a trimming technique using especially adapted, imported power tools - designed and tested in USA. These tools reduce the time and physical effort that it takes to complete trims. MOST horses are easily clicker-trained (in about 20 mins) to accept the noise and vibrations of these specially adapted power tools. See videos of us using the tools
